Does anyone remember the candlelighting ceremony down at the lake at the end of camp? All I remember is lighting a candle that was stuck to a piece of tree bark and setting it adrift on the lake. It was a beautiful sight. Did we sing a song? I don’t remember anything else…
Robin,
I am not sure if you remember me. My name is Phyllis Levinthal. I remember you. I just came back from the Berkshires last week and looked up Crane Lake and started to see these posts.
When do they have these reunions? I would love to attend one.
Thansk Phyllis

Yes, CLC was always a predominantly Jewish camp, and thus had a Friday night service. It consisted of singing songs such as “Where have all the flowers gone” and “We shall overcome.” There was some responsive reading. I don’t think we said the Sh’ma. That was the extent of the jewishness of the camp.
The arts and crafts shack, which used to be located next to the nature shack (if that’s even still there) and Studio burned down. The kiln had been left on overnight and a fire broke out and the building was burned to the ground.
I remember when I was a CW and Barbara and I were the Captains on the White Team – I wrote this entrance song and Barbara wrote the ballad (what did we call it?) for Fight Night:
To the tune of the We’re off to see the Wizard
The White Team marches inward with victory close behind.
The Kings all join to claim our fame, blue cobras we must remind.
Our crowns reign high our voices proud, we’ll stamp the snakes we’ll sparkle proud our spirits sour with royalty tonight
Our kingdom forever ranks supreme. da da da da da da da
continue with the tune of The Wicked Witch is Dead
Hail judges the Kings arrived
Hear our screams and hear our cries
The White Team is marching onto fame
The score amounts as we unite – we’ll fight – Blue Cobras step aside – we’ll win this sing night
Clap twice repeat
How did I remember this song?????
This is bringing back so many memories – what a fun time!
Sadly, the following email came today from the current director of CLC:
Dear Crane Lake Camp Alumni,
It is with great sadness that I inform everyone that Ed Ulanoff, long time owner and director of Crane Lake Camp, passed away yesterday. Ed touched so many lives at Crane Lake, fostering a love for camp among campers and staff that spans across generations.
The funeral will be 11:15 a.m. Sunday, January 29th at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th St at Amsterdam Ave in Manhattan.

Hey,
I’m a current Crane Lake Camper, (00-), going into my upper senior year (now called upper chaverim).
They had services back in the 60′s, before the URJ bought the camp? And what was the ‘Fire’?
